The Quaboag River

Last Updated: 2/2018
General Description
The Quaboag River is a 25.2-mile-long (40.7 km) river in Massachusetts that heads at Quaboag Pond in Brookfield at an elevation of 594 feet (181 m) above sea level. It flows west to the village of Three Rivers, Massachusetts, at an elevation of 290 feet (88 m).
The Quaboag River flows through the towns of Brookfield, West Brookfield, and Warren before joining the Ware River and Swift River in Three Rivers section of Palmer, to form the Chicopee River. This river is therefore part of the Chicopee River Watershed.
The river receives its name from Quaboag Pond, an Indian name meaning "red-water". At one time, this pond was called Podunk Pond. Early industry started along the Quaboag River downstream from West Brookfield, where the river started a 304-foot change in elevation, providing significant waterpower. Major heavy industry was located in Warren, Massachusetts, because of the available waterpower from the river. Many of the dams on the river, used to provide waterpower, were destroyed during floods and not repaired or replaced. Parts of them remain, providing a hint of the river’s industrial past.
The Quaboag River's Western end is a favorite playspot for whitewater paddlers in the spring but the Eastern end is a delightful place of an easy day of flatwater paddling. The flatwater section runs from Quaboag Pond (25.2) in Brookfield to Lucy Stone Park in Warren (16.8). There is usually enough water throughout the season to paddle this 8.4 miles of river.

STATISTICS

Total Length: 25.2 miles

The miles are numbered from the Chicopee River to the headwaters at the outlet of Quaboag Pond.
The Quaboag River heads at Quaboag Pond, flows through the towns of Brookfield, West Brookfield, and Warren before joining the Ware River and Swift River in Three Rivers, to form the Chicopee River. This river is therefore part of the Chicopee River Watershed. Here is a break down of the connecting lakes and waterways:
  • Fivemile River empties into Lake Lashaway (274 acres) which discharges into the Brookfield River and is joined by the Sevenmile River then empties into Quaboag Pond (541 acres).

  • The Quacumquasit Pond (223 acres) has a small spillway that empties into Quaboag Pond from the south.

  • The Quaboag River begins where water leaves Quaboag Pond.  This is mile 25.2, the headwaters of the river.

  • Mill Brook and Sucker Brook empty into Wickaboag Pond (315 acres) which then empties into the Quaboag River at mile 19.3.

  • Brookhaven Lake (34.2 acres) empties into Lamberton Brook which passes under Lamberton Dam and empties into the Quaboag River at mile 18.8.
  • Comins Pond (26 acres) has a small brook that empties into the Quabog River at mile 16.5.
  • There are other brooks and streams that feed into the Quaboag but we have described the lions share of water.
  • Eventually, at a place called Three Rivers in Palmer, the Quaboag River meets the Ware River and they end and become the headwates of the Chicopee River begins.
