 Deerfield River Reach 15

Last Updated: 2/2016
Stillwater Bridge to Mouth of the Deerfield

Description
I typically paddle Reaches 14 and 15 together.  I have made this paddle many times and is one of my summer favorites.
Reach 15 is a quiet paddle that meanders through farm land and behind Deerfield Village.  It is perfect for a lazy summer day.

  •  Mile 7.8 Just below the Stillwater bridge, the river widens and drops.  Several times in the summer I have found this so low I had to walk dragging my boat until I reached the Route 91 bridges.
  • Mile 7.5 - Route 91 bridges. Don't be discouraged since the river will get deep and slow below this area.
  • Mile 7.0 to Mile 3.6 - This lazy river section is a great place to play between boats.  If you have a fishing rod, then make some casts and relax.
  • Mile 4.5 - A couple of sandy island will be on you're left.  On the right bank puts you very close to the center of Old Deerfield Village.
  • Mile 3.6 - The Rocks Stop is where a group of big rocks, a chute where the river travels and a nice pool to swim in.  Its a great place to just chill out!  Eat lunch.
  • Mile 1.5 - With a golf course on your left, the river turns left and you immediately see the Route 5 bridge and Railroad bridge behind it.
  • Mile 1.1 - Keep to the right side as you pass under the Route 5 bridge.  The Greenfield Take-Out is between the bridges on the right bank.  If you are taking out here, carry you're boat up the steep trail to the road above.
  • Mile 0.4 - Pass under a railroad bridge marking the last bridge.
  • Mile 0.0 - Pay close attention to the current as you pass into the Connecticuit River.  There can be a mix of currents.  You will need to carefully use these to cross to the far side of the Connecticuit River.  Note that up river is the Montague City Road bridge.
  • Mile 118.2 - Down river is the 1880 Key Stone railroad bridge.  This is now a pedestrian bridge.  On the east side of this bridge is the take-out provided by the power company.
